About two years ago, my daughter brought home a black cat that she named Salem. I had been allergic to cats almost all of my life, and was extremely against the idea of having one in my house. I honestly had no clue how much of a difference he would make in my life, let alone lead me to adopting my own cat.
I began seeing the difference he had made for my daughter, he lit up her world. I thought that surely cats couldn’t be so bad if he was able to do that for her, so little by little I would hold him and get to know him. I realized that I wasn’t allergic to cats anymore, and that I actually wanted one for myself.
I began holding and spending time with Salem anytime I felt anxious, and somehow his presence gave me an overwhelming sense of peace. Fast forward two years, two heart attacks, and a Lupus diagnosis later, Salem has helped me through it all. However, he hasn’t done it alone in awhile— I adopted my own cat, Binx. Albeit, Binx and Salem are both black cats, but they’re so different. Salem was the runt of his litter and isn’t shy whatsoever… Binx is almost the same size as some dogs I’ve seen and is very picky about who he is affectionate towards. My daughters tell me that Binx acts just like I do, so I guess he was meant to be mine! Binx and Salem have been a light in a dreadful situation— they bring me back down to earth when everything is a mess. They’re now deemed, “The voids.”
